Starting in 2005, all cars manufactured after 1976 are required to have an emissions test. Before this rule came into force on April 1st, 2005, vehicles built before then were subject only to a 30-year rolling exemption and would not need any further consideration for smog checks unless they reached more than 30 years old when it expired or if their engine size respectively changed significantly enough where its performance was no longer deemed acceptable by relevant law enforcement agencies around the country who enforce these regulations such as California’s Department Of Motor Vehicles. So Who Needs A Smog Check In California?
Vehicles produced in 1976 or later are required to participate in the biennial smog check program in participating counties under the California Smog Check Program. Alameda, Butte, Colusa, Contra Costa, Fresno, Glenn, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, Madera, Marin, Merced, Monterey, Napa, Nevada, Orange, Sacramento, San Benito, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Shasta, Solano, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Tulare, Ventura, Yolo, or Yuba.
Where Can I Go To Get A Smog Check?
The California Smog Check Program is administered by the California Department of Consumer Affairs Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), and there are over 7,000 state-licensed and independently owned smog check stations throughout The Golden State.
