Blackhawk is known for its uniform McMansion architecture and suburban lifestyle, with the median household income being $167,875 and median home price of $1,117,500.

Blackhawk ‘s history began in the late 1970s, when Ken Behring, Florida real estate developer, formed the Blackhawk Development Corporation to break the ground on what had previously been the Blackhawk Ranch. Approximately 2,400 homes have been built and 2,000 acres have been dedicated to Open Space as part of Mount Diablo State Park.

Blackhawk ‘s reputation for high-end luxury homes is long-standing and well-deserved. Although there are many houses here that have been built speculatively and with a living space well below 2,500 square feet, including some townhouses, a glance along Blackhawk Drive reveals a number of architectural styles where the English Tudor sits happily alongside the French Provincial or the Greek Revival home. Many of these properties are over 5,000 square feet and are built to the highest standards.

Golf plays a large part in the lives of many Blackhawk residents, as might be expected. Blackhawk Country Club offers an exclusive private membership opportunity for the most discerning golfers.

In the middle of Country Club West, there is a 6,904 yard (6,313 m) Lakeside golf course designed by Bruce Devlin and Robert Von Hagge, a course that annually hosts the Longs Drugs Challenge, an event on the LPGA Tour. The newer 6,700 yard (6,126 m) Falls Golf Course, designed by Ted Robinson, winds through the East Country Club.

But it’s not all about golf. There are a lot of other Blackhawk recreation alternatives. Blackhawk’s Tennis Club includes 20 tennis courts, a clubhouse and a pro shop, and Blackhawk ‘s Swimming Club includes a competition-sized pool, a spa and dressing rooms, and training programs. The 25 acre (100,000 m2) Sports and Recreation Center includes basketball courts, outdoor volleyball courts, children’s playground, an Olympic swimming pool, sports fields and an amphitheater.

Blackhawk Plaza promotes itself as a “East Bay’s premier shopping and dining destination featuring a water landscaped interior courtyard with terraced shopping and dining facilities.” This is really the most attractive shopping center with an exceptionally upscale feel. Here you can find a mix of well-known names as well as a number of local stores. There is also the impressive Draeger Market, which provides an exceptionally wide range of food and produce.

The various restaurants in Blackhawk Plaza are appreciated as much as, if not more than, shopping. There is a wide range of cuisines at all levels, from burgers to burgers. And, of course, Blackhawk Country Club members have access to their own well-known restaurants.

The 2010 United States Census reported that Blackhawk had a population of 9,354 people. The population density was 1,609.7 per square mile (621.5 / km2). Blackhawk was 6,882 (73.6 percent) White, 172 (1.8 percent) African American, 15 (0.2 percent) Native American, 1,801 (19.3 percent) Asian, 8 (0.1 percent) Pacific Islander, 75 (0.8 per cent) from other races, and 401 (4.3 percent) from two or more races.
